Sterling Silver Chain Necklaces FAQs

925 sterling silver is a beautiful, high-quality metal — and with a little care, it will stay looking its best for years to come. Although it can tarnish over time due to factors like skin type, perfume, humidity, and air exposure, it's very easy to restore its shine.

To keep your earrings looking their best:

  1. Store in an airtight container, away from air, water, and light.
  2. Put jewellery on last — after makeup, perfume, hairspray, and creams, and remove before bathing or showering.
  3. If tarnish appears, simply buff with the polishing cloth included with your order or a silver cleaning solution and your earrings will look as good as new.

After each wear, give your sterling silver necklace a quick buff with a polishing cloth to remove any oils or residue — this goes a long way in preventing tarnish buildup. For necklaces worn regularly, a more thorough clean every two to four weeks is recommended. If you only wear it occasionally, clean it before and after each use before storing. Pay extra attention to the clasp and any chain links, where dirt and oils tend to collect most. If tarnish does appear, address it as soon as possible — the sooner you treat it, the easier it is to restore its shine.

You can find each necklace's length listed in the product description. While most of our pendants come with a 46cm (18in) curb chain as standard, we also offer chains in additional lengths, available to purchase separately. Where a chain comes in multiple sizes, simply select your preferred length from the dropdown menu. If you'd like to extend a chain yourself, we also sell extender chains separately.

For a choker fit, we recommend a 35–40cm (14–16in) necklace or chain. Alternatively, measure around your neck and add 5cm to find your ideal choker length.

For a full breakdown of necklace lengths and how they sit, visit our necklace size guide.

Layering necklaces is all about varying lengths so each chain sits at a distinct level and none compete for the same space. A good starting point is pairing a choker necklace (35–40cm) with a mid-length chain (45–50cm) and a longer pendant necklace (60–70cm). If you're new to layering necklaces, start with two before adding a third — building up gradually makes it easier to find what works for you.

Mixing textures and chain styles adds visual interest without overwhelming the look. Try combining a short curb chain, a mid-length delicate cable chain, and a long pendant necklace. Experimenting with different charms and pendants is a great way to create a fun, unique look that reflects your personal style. For a cohesive finish, keep all your layers in the same metal tone — sterling silver necklaces naturally complement each other and create a clean, polished look.

If your necklace chains tend to tangle throughout the day, a necklace layering clasp holds multiple chains together at the back, keeping them separated and in place. Finally, consider your neckline — V-necks and open necklines give each chain room to sit naturally and show off your layered necklace stack to its full effect.

You can untangle a knotted sterling silver chain by placing it on a flat, hard surface and using a needle, pin, or bobby pin to gently loosen and work through the knot. Avoid pulling the chain from both ends, as this can tighten the knot further or damage the links.
