You know that moment when you realise just how many of your friends are getting married or having babies? That moment when you realise that your only worry has been choosing the right bar for your next night out?
Well, that moment has just happened to me.
One of my close friends recently tied the knot and, after just two months, she was pregnant with her first child. Same year, same month, and a mate of mine (whose face I’m starting to forget) moved in with his girlfriend, and not long after that, he announced the date of their wedding. What’s more, two of my colleagues are on maternity leave, a woman at my gym is working out to fit into her wedding dress and—Okay, I could carry on, but I think I’ve made my point.
Life in my late twenties is certainly not how I pictured it at 15, but nothing hit me quite as hard as the realisation that my drinking buddy was about to turn 30 and that I’d soon be jumping that hurdle myself.
It’s fair to say that I’m a last minute kind of person, especially when it comes to organising events or buying presents. So, with only a couple of days left before her party, I still didn’t have a clue what to buy her.
I wanted to give her something that was both unique and symbolic. I know it’s cheesy, but I like the idea of her turning 60 and having a memento that reminds her of her youth and our long-lasting friendship.
And so I began my search. I almost went mad trying to find something suitable and that was within my budget—until I saw it: a triple-band sterling silver ring! Three rings linked together with each ring symbolizing a decade, a perfect reminder of all the great things achieved in those 30 years, of all the laughs shared and tears shed, of every moment that led us here. It was a token of the past, and a way of embracing those years while looking to the future and the new memories that await.
There was just one tiny problem, she doesn’t wear rings…
… So, I made a necklace by sliding the ring onto a chain.
Needless to say, she loved it, or maybe that was the alcohol talking!
My friend is now 30 and we are still going for drinks, still planning the next one, and still as unhinged as ever. So maybe when they say that age is just a number, they aren’t lying after all. Oh, and she wears the necklace all the time!
And as a little bonus, here are a few alternatives:
